Contemporary design of the terraced garden

The designer seamlessly carried the homeowners' interior style into their new outdoor space, creating a garden that felt like an extension of their home.

The owners of this property wanted to improve the look of their terraced back garden, overlooking the beautiful Forth of Firth. They opted for a contemporary design to match their new-build modern extension, created by A.S. Associates; an independent firm of architects and architectural technologists, based in Newburgh (Fife).

The client wanted a space where they could relax and entertain their family, that would also be practical and easy to maintain.

The designer seamlessly carried the homeowners' interior style into their new outdoor space, creating a garden that felt like an extension of their home.

A seating area had been created outside, beyond the sliding doors and underneath the newly constructed balcony was a perfect place to retire away from the afternoon sun. Artificial grass was used in some areas, rather than hard material, to add a softer surface and some greenery.

For the patio, stairs and paths, we used large format porcelain paving for ease of maintenance and a sleek, modern finish.

Prefabricated aluminium stairs were installed to give side access to the garden, a structure matching the extension’s cladding in style and colour.

A decision was made to keep the existing decking, which was refreshed and painted dark grey to match the colour of the extension cladding.

The planting design included only a few varieties of plants, to add additional texture and interest. As well as Yucca Filamentosa, we used Pachysandra Termianlis and Sarcococca Hookerina and a variety of Humilis and Vinca Minor Gertrude Jekyll.
