What is Millboard composite decking?

Millboard is a high-performance wood alternative that is engineered using sustainable composite materials.

Underneath a protective top layer lies a wood-free polymer resin core. This is particularly strong and durable, as it’s reinforced with fibre. Millboard is solid rather than hollow, which protects the decking from a whole host of problems commonly associated with natural timber decking.

Each Millboard decking board is hand coloured, and you may even be able to see the unique paint strokes on each board.

Overall, Millbaord composite decking in Scotland is durable, weather resistant, anti-slip and better for the environment compared to traditional timber decking.

Why composite decking is perfect for homes in Scotland

In a wet and rainy country such as Scotland, homeowners need to be careful about the type of materials they use for home improvements. Be it in their garden, roof, windows or doors, it’s important to only use materials that are able to cope with Scotland’s unpredictable weather.

And that’s exactly what Millboard composite decking offers homeowners in Scotland.

With its durable and hard-wearing construction, millboard decking can withstand the harsh conditions of Scotland's climate without losing its charm or integrity. Additionally, its anti-slip surface makes it a safe choice for families with children or older individuals who may be more prone to slips and falls.

Plus, Millboard composite decking is designed to last for many years, meaning you can enjoy your outdoor space without the need for constant maintenance or replacement.

So, whether you're enjoying a quiet morning coffee or hosting a lively barbecue or outdoor meal with friends and family, Millboard composite decking is sure to provide a beautiful and safe outdoor space for every occasion and will be more than able to withstand the wet and windy conditions that Scotland is so accustom to.

Millboard Composite Decking Scotland: Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I use Millboard decking?

Millboard decking is extremely versatile and (subject to building control) can be used in practically every outdoor space. Millboard can be used as the decorative face for most outdoor designs, so long as it’s fixed to a structural element.

Do all Millboard decking boards look the same?

Millboard has been designed to replicate the natural variances of timber, and so, as natural wood, each board is unique. When buying all the Millboard decking for your project, it’s crucial to ensure that the colour is consistent. We would always recommend laying out the boards before installation, following your vision.

Does Millboard decking stain?

The Lastane® finish is resistant to food and drink stains and everyday wear and tear. However, sharp objects such as unprotected table or chair legs or metal planter bases can leave marks if dragged across the surface, so take care when moving these items around.

Will my Millboard decking change colour over time?

As with all products exposed to the elements, including sunlight, snow and rain, Millboard will naturally weather and tone down over time. You may see a slight yellowing, especially in the deeper grain of the decking. Loss of gloss is also expected and intentional.

Does Millboard decking get hot in the sun?

As with all composite products, the surfaces of the boards tend to be hotter than timber when exposed to direct sunlight. Darker colours will feel hotter, and shoes are recommended when walking on them in the sun.

When decking in areas by heat/UV reflective glass or around pools, particular caution should be taken.

Does Millboard decking expand or contract?

As Millboard is made from a resin mineral composition, it is stable compared to timber or composites based on timber. Our team at Landscape Brothers has a comprehensive understanding of how these boards must be laid to optimise their appearance, durability, and functionality.

Is my decking slip-resistant?

Yes. Millboard rigorously tests their decking to ensure they achieve the highest possible anti-slip rating. This is largely thanks to their patented Lastane® coating.

Why do my boards have a slight oily/shiny finish?

As the boards are a moulded product, a release agent is used in the manufacturing process. When the boards are first delivered, this release agent is still on the surface. This may result in the boards looking shiny or waxed or have small particles of dirt and water puddling.

This release agent will come off the surface within six to eight weeks due to natural weathering. After installation, this process can be accelerated by cleaning the boards with warm soapy water and a stiff brush.

Are my boards easy to clean?

One of the best features of Millboard decking is that it requires very little maintenance. The boards can benefit from an occasional wipe down but shouldn’t require any pressure washing - and please stay away from solvents and abrasive cleaners as they can damage your decking.
